Eels repel Vikings in Moresby South league

KOKI Eels beat the Vikings 12-0 in round 3 of the Moresby South Rugby League at Sir Bill Skate Oval Kaugere on Sunday.
Earlier last week the club received a new set of uniforms courtesy of local businessman Kesley Mune. The Eels led 8-0 at halftime thanks to tries from Simon John and Lucky Rumua.
Vikings tried in vain to put points on the board but a disjointed attack compounded by mistakes kept them from applying any pressure on the Eels defence.
The Koki side capped off a decent showing with centre Paul Nanga crossing for a try.
But the recent upgrading of the oval with sand created dusty conditions but players and officials endured without complaint.
Coach Bixie Tala attributed the win to their discipline on defence to overcome newcomers Vikings, who took to spoiling tactics.
“We are making a come back with a lot of our players coming from Koki, 8-Mile and 9-Mile,” Tala said. “Hopefully we can keep winning, keep our form and maybe win a title like we did back in 2006,” Tala said of the club’s reign as the Moresby South champions from 2003 to 2006.
Moresby South Rugby League deputy chairman Bagelo Solien said their major sponsor local MP Justin Tkatchenko had provided a water pump and an irrigation system for the oval which would be used next week.
Solien said the surface would be watered overnight to prevent the surface building up.
