AN annual corporate eight-ball billiards competition is set to be launched at the Aviat Social and Sporting Club in Lae, Morobe, today.
Games chairman Ben Johnson told The National that they were looking at 16 teams for this year’s competition.
It will be the seventh year of the competition with Bank South Pacific Financial Group Limited winning the inaugural premiership.
The other previous winners are Ela Motors, Gamoga Lawyers, GS Marine, Kuima Security and reigning champions Golpu One.
Johnson said this year’s sponsor will be the club itself with a sponsorship of K10,000.
He said the registration fee was K500 per team with player registration at K50 for club members and K100 for non-members. The competition will run for three months.
“We are looking at a good turn-out for the games,” Johnson said.
“The competition will end by mid-November.
“The deadline for registration is about a month from Aug 11.
“We have sent invitations to business houses and are looking forward to positive turn-outs throughout the competition. We would like to see business houses coming out and broadening Lae’s player base for better selections.”
Johnson said the competition had helped bring out the best in players with the city’s billiards standards continuing to improve.
He said young players such as Dang Dang Monmai, Jordan Tau, Joshua Samol and Caroline Matawai were making an impact in the competition.
