CRICKET Papua New Guinea hosted the Under-12 boys Gold Nuggets Kriket grand final at the Colts cricket ground in Port Moresby yesterday.
The cricket competition took place over a four-week period, with four schools — Ela Murray International, Gordon International, Koroboro International and Nonu Independent — competing in five-over contests.
The Ela Murray International School (Temis) side were dominant throughout the competition, going undefeated into the final against Koroboro.
Ela Murray proved to be the stronger side, dismissing Koroboro for 28 runs and claiming victory by 10 wickets.
Cricket PNG’s National Capital District regional cricket manager Lista Oala said the competition had been a success, with the students showing a keen interest in the sport.
“It has been a very exciting and successful competition leading up to this grand final,” Oala said.
“It was challenging, particularly for the students who were new to the game. However, they improved a lot during their training,” he said. Oala said the competition would not have been a success without the support of its sponsor, Gold Nuggets, and the students’ parents and teachers.
On hand to present Ela Murray with their winning trophy was Gold Nuggets representative Nancy Lai. Koroboro captain Dago Morea claimed the player-of-the-tournament and best-bowler awards.
The tournament is part of Cricket PNG’s development pathway programme. In the U13 boys’ final, Koroboro 28/6 were beaten by Ela Murray by 10 wickets.
