AN elementary school located in the heart of Bumbu Settlement in Lae is the first school in Lae settlements to graduate its pioneer grade 2 students under the standard-based curriculum (SBC) on Wednesday.
Bumbu Stage 2 Elementary School was established in 2002 to provide education services for the growing children population of Bumbu.
The school was one of the pilot schools to implement SBC curriculum since its reintroduction in 2015.
Head teacher Jessian Bukka said since 2016, the school was partly implementing the SBC.
“Only two subjects, mathematics and culture and community, were taught under the outcome-based curriculum because we did not have the teachers’ guides and syllabus,” she said.
“The students have been well vested in the English language and they are qualified to enter grade 3 at our feeder school, the Butibum Primary School.
“We will definitely implement the full SBC subjects in two years’ time.”
The school was said to have been well-managed in terms of tuition fee free funding and project fees with their records confirmed by Lae education services’ official, Velma Woricke.
Community representative Janet Waiki encouraged parents and guardians to take care of the school because it had been providing services for children in the community.
“The school is located in the settlement, and settlers must take good care of the facilities,” she said.
“Drunkards or negative behaviour must not be entertained in the school grounds.
“All children should be taken care of by the community.”
