RABAUL Gurias winger Roy Ellison says he is aiming for a stronger Digicel Cup campaign this year after the former SP Hunter’s 2020 season was hampered by injuries.
The 27-year-old, from East New Britain, joined the Hunters in 2019 after he was scouted while playing with the Mendi Muruks in the inter-city rugby league competition. The Vunamami native, who made his Hunters debut against the Easts Tigers in Wabag in 2019, said training with the Gurias was challenging.
“But being with the Gurias again this year is an opportunity for me as we’re focusing on refining our skills,” Ellison said.
The former Muruks fullback said his goal was to lock down a regular starting spot in the Kokopo-based side.
“This season, I want to work harder at training and get the basics right,” Ellison said.
According to Ellison, the Gurias have recruited a number of young talents from competitions in East New Britain.
“I am happy to train with our new players,” he said.
“They just have to focus on getting the basics right because the little things add up to bigger things.
“Discipline and commitment are crucial.
“At the end of the day, whether you’re a new player or not, we’re all competing against each other for spots in the final squad.”
