Eluh: Police favour cash cases

A FORMER senior officer has told police investigators and prosecutors to uphold their duties when dealing with cases.
Thomas Eluh, who now heads the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) said investigations by police had been dragging with police investigators preferring to deal with cases that involved money.
“Policemen, investigators and prosecutors want to work on cases where people have money and delayed ordinary cases these days,” he said.
Eluh said police officers tended to serve politicians, bureaucrats and business people with money and resources during the course of their duty, disregarding ethics and professionalism.
He said it was the duty of the police officers to get their court files prepared properly before going to court to address a case and unfortunately many cases were being dismissed or delayed due to lack of evidence and proper investigations.
“It is your responsibility to prepare your courts files and present them during the court and not to expect magistrates to have pity on you,” he said.
He said police officers had shown themselves to be more willing to work when there were inducements or things they could gain rather than simply carrying out their duty and doing what they had sworn an oath to do.
He said when an investigator arrested someone through the information from his statement, the list of witnesses and other necessary information needed to be properly filed.
Eluh said the quality of policing and law enforcement had not improved over the years because there was a lack of pride and sense of duty in the Constabulary.
