NC Civil Works Oro found redemption in Lae, beating Welgris Highlands 2-1 in what was supposed to be the second match of a double header.
But the match between Besta PNG United and WNB Tavur was cancelled after the competition management failed to fly Tavur out of Hoskins, West New Britain, on Friday.
Welgris started off strongly, with Venden Sole scoring their first and only goal in the 11th minute.
Oro’s Chuckston Aopi and Andrew Marampau found the Highlanders physical defence impentrable in the early going.
Despite not being engaged much on Oro’s left flank, Lae Football Association export Ken Gule, shone with strong assistance in attacks.
Aopi missed two certain goals in the first half, while Marampau was repeatedlyvaught offside.
Welgris’ Edmond Sepa, Rocky Upaiga, Benjamin Kolua and Peter Tawelo did well for their team with strong attacks and good ball distribution.
Russel Norik changed the tide against Oro in the 60th minute, when he scored the equaliser to the delight of the crowd.
Norik threatened again with another shot at goal that rebounded onto the boots of Peterson Elzah, who blasted in the second on the stroke of fulltime.
Oro coach Milton Gori said their win was because of the focus on team effort during training.
“It was a crucial third game and special game for us heading into next week’s match with Hekari,” Gori said.
Welgris assistant coach Ungia Aiyoke said despite coping with pressure in the first half, his players failed to maintain their form in the second half.
Kimbe-based Tavur and PNGFA’s Besta United will now play on Wednesday at the Sir Ignatius Kilage stadium.
