‘Empowering women leads to strong family, community’

ENCOURAGING female participation in the country’s economy is vital for building a stronger family and community, according to a local business woman.
Owner of the 7-Mile service station in Port Moresby Roselyn Tia said “when you educate a woman, you educate a nation”.
“When you empower a woman to heavily participate in the economy of the country, you are looking at building a stronger viable family unit,” she said.
Speaking during the opening of the 7-Mile service station in Port Moresby yesterday, Tia acknowledged the partnership between the Government and private sector through the management and National Airports Corporation (NAC) board for recognising a woman in business.
“I’ve learned over time that prosperity is limited if we undervalue the partnership between the Government and the private sector to promote women in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Too often we hear about how empowering a women can empower a nation but we don’t ask how,” she said.
“We don’t know how it looks like and we accept this idea to be true without evidence and because we don’t have a practical answer, it all become lip service.”
