EAST New Britain is preparing for the inaugural New Guinea Islands Youth Games which are to place in Kokopo next month, according to an official.
Acting community development provincial adviser Peter Tutuai told The National earlier this month that it was the regional version of the Papua New Guinea Games.
He said the concept had been developed to mobilise youths through sports.
“We are now preparing,” Tutuai said.
“An organising committee has been established.
“The launching and the host contract signing was done between the provincial government, National Youth Development Authority and PNG Sports Foundation in February.”
He said all the districts in the region were eligible to send their contingents for the week-long Games.
“We have set a date for next month, during the third-term holiday, since we’re expecting students to compete in the Games,” Tutuai said.
“But we are having another meeting.
“Should there be a need to make changes, we will do so and finalise the programme.”
He said the general election had affected plans to hold a trial run with participants from the local-level government areas in the province.
“The Games will incorporate spiritual and cultural activities,” Tutuai said.
