TEAM East New Britain is in box seat to win the softball gold medal at the PNG Games after registering two impressive victories over hosts West Britain (17-1 women, 15-2 men) in the opening round of competition.
Last Friday they dished out a similar thrashing to Madang (13-8 women, 11-6 men) and the East New Britons look set to maintain their standing as the Games softball champions.
Sports competition manager Moses ToLingling said softball would be played under League system where the winners would be decided by the number of games won during the tournament.
Madang rallied back to beat West New Britain in the men’s (10-6) and women’s (12-8) matches.
“We have completed the first round of the competition and we are now looking forward to the second round starting on Monday and hopefully the medal presentation on Tuesday,” ToLingling said.
ToLingling said the competition originally attracted five centres but two withdrew in the last minute.
“It was disappointing, major centres like NCD, Central and Morobe could not field teams to promote and add value their code at the PNG Games,” he said.
East New Britain (men and women) lead their divisions with four points followed by Madang while West New Britain are yet to register a win.
Fixtures: Mon, Nov 27 – 0800 W ENB v WNB, 1000 M ENB v WNB, 1200 W Madang v ENB, 1400 M Madang v ENB.
