EAST New Britain police have reported an increase in gang-rape in the province.
Acting provincial police commander Snr Insp David Yapu highlighted this yesterday when he reported two cases of gang rape this month.
He said it was not normal for them to be receiving reports of gang rape and this was becoming a new and worrying trend in the province.
Yapu said he had instructed the Kokopo police commander to fast-track the two recent cases so the offenders could face the full force of the law.
He said such crime was inhuman and disrespectful to the women in the province.
The first case took place at Raniou at Bitapaka LLG in Kokopo on Jan 12 when a man took a young woman to Kabaleo and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent.
The suspect then told two other suspects to rape the victim.
The second incident occurred on Jan 21 at Takubar in Kokopo when a man threatened the victim with a bush knife and took her to his home where he raped her.
The suspect then invited other men to rape the victim.
Yapu said both victims were taken to the hospital while the suspects fled and were in hiding but police knew their identity and expected to arrest them soon.
According to statistics, police reported only one case last July.
