Encouraging times

Sports

HeLLO there to all our SP Hunters families and friends throughout the country and overseas. Welcome to my 2nd and final edition of Church Comments in your favourite rugby league newspaper — The National.
We are in the last week of our training block before Christmas. It’s been an encouraging time as we continue to grow and learn as a team.
The players are adapting to the style of training and have really made some progress both technically and tactically.
Unfortunately, as a coach, you have to make some tough decisions and I have some coming up.
We have a squad of 41 players and I will have to cut that down to around 30 after Christmas.
For those players who miss out, it’s not the end of the road for them at the Hunters.
Most Intrust Super Cup teams use 35-38 players on average a season, there will be opportunities for players down the track.
So for me, it will be about giving the players feedback on how they can get back into the squad.
Then it’s up to them to be ready to take the opportunity when that comes around.
Our last pre-season session is on Saturday. We then return to training on Jan 6.
This will be a good opportunity for the players to enjoy some family time and catch up with friends before shift our focus on the run into the first trial match.
I’m also looking forward to the four players on rest from test duties coming into the programme.
I have really enjoyed the company of the player and staff. After the initial feeling-out period, we are starting to build genuine relationships and it’s encouraging to build close bonds with those you spend so much time with.
There’s been some real leaders who have emerged from the group. Some lead by talking like Ase Boas, Ila Alu, Silas Gahuna and Rhadley Brawa.
Others lead by action like Junior Rop, Baundo Aba and Casey Dickson. While I know some of these guys are natural leaders, seeing these men take it upon themselves to influence other players is outstanding.
Please respect and be kind to each other during this festive season.
This column will be back on Jan 9, so till then, I wish you all an enjoyable Christmas, keep safe and I’ll see you in the New Year.

Cheers,
Matt
