Enga police arrest 26 over various criminal activities

POLICE in Enga have been kept busy of late with 26 people arrested over various offences involving illegal betel nut trading and damaging property.
Enga police commander acting Supt Epenes Nili said betel nut trading was banned in Enga and the 12 people recently caught selling it were in custody awaiting to appear in court.
Groups caught smuggling betel nuts into the province face a fine of K10,000 and individuals caught chewing or selling can be fined K5,000.
Supt Nili said police had set up a checkpoint at Kumul to check on passengers and to make sure they practised social distancing.
“I have conducted awareness among police personnel to be on the alert as anything can happen,” he said.
“They are now patrolling the highway.”
In Wabag last Friday, 14 people were arrested for damaging the Ipatas Centre. Police believe that it was the work of a group of landowners who were not happy with what they had been paid.
They allegedly stoned the building, damaging glasses and vehicles.
Meanwhile, he said that a man was killed during a fight at Lai Bridge on Sunday.
