CHURCHES, schools and civil society groups in Wabag have urged law enforcement agencies to stop the fight between the Kii and Kala tribes near the town in Enga.
More than 2000 people and students took part in a march to Wabag on Thursday. It was organised by the Sari Holy Family Parish of the Wabag diocese and supported by churches, schools and tribal leaders.
Tribal fighting has claimed 10 lives and is affecting government services, business operations and the movement of people, including students.
Those who took part in the march included members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Lutheran Church, Christian Fellowship Apostolic Church, Pentecostal churches, Sopas Hospital and Nursing College, Kopen Secondary School, Sari Primary School, Sakarip Primary, Yai Primary and tribesmen from Iripun, Malapin, and Sakalin.
They presented a petition to acting provincial police commander Epenes Nilli and law and order director Nelson Lea.
They called on the government and the police to provide security along the road at Amala and Teremanda, and Sopas Nursing College and Hospital, Kopen Secondary and other schools which had been closed. They demanded the two tribes end the fighting and allow peace and harmony to prevail.
Nilli thanked everyone for taking the initiative. “It is God’s plan that churches intervene because the police or the government cannot find ways to end the fight,” he said.
