PAPUA New Guinea international and Broncos back David Mead says Brisbane should take last week’s 14-20 National Rugby League loss to frontrunners Penrith as a step in the right direction.
The 32-year-old, from Central, told The National after the round-six loss that the hosts had the Panthers on the ropes and were in front for most of the Suncorp Stadium clash.
However, Mead blamed the loss on their 10 errors compared with Penrith’s nine.
“I thought we played well in terms of effort, but we didn’t really threaten them on their tryline,” the Tubusereia native said.
“We made far too many errors on their 20m line.
“They got out of trouble easily and with (Penrith halfback) Nathan Cleary’s kicking game, it helped them.”
Mead said if the team could play with the same effort as they did against the Panthers and with less errors, they could record more wins in the remainder of the season.
“The results will be in our favour more often than not,” the former Gold Coast Titan and Catalans Dragon said.
“Our effort last night (Thursday) is something we can take heart from.
“We can take some confidence out of that performance.”
The Broncos have only recorded one win from the first six rounds.
Meanwhile, Mead said he enjoyed playing at centre last week with Corey Oates returning from the Intrust Super Cup to take his place on the wing.
“It was great playing with Corey (Oates) on the wing next to me,” he said.
“He has a lot of experience and he always gets us out of our end very well with his runs.
“I look forward to playing alongside Corey on the edge if Kevie (coach Kevin Walters) picks the same team in the next rounds.”
