AN escapee who allegedly murdered a young girl, her brother, a child and wounded the child’s father, was hacked to death by angry relatives before police nabbed him.
Northern police commander Chief Insp Ewai Segi said the deceased had escaped from Popondetta police station cells with 18 others in early April.
“He was wanted for several criminal activities,” he said.
A video went viral on social media platforms last week showing the deceased’s hacked up body.
His hands and legs were tied to a stick and taken around town with blood pouring out from the wounds.
Segi said: “It was a broad daylight incident that got everyone’s attention.
“People are frustrated at the level of criminal activities in the province.”
Police said the video was a result of frustrations by immediate relatives and friends who went on a manhunt after he allegedly committed the murders. Segi said:
“He was trying to befriend the young girl, a Grade 10 student at Inonda High School but she refused.
“He dragged her out of the house and used a bush knife to hack her to death.
“When her brother came to help her, he was also hacked to death,” he said.
Segi said a three-year-old boy was across the street with his father when the man ran across the road and slashed the boy’s stomach.
He died soon after, while his father, who came to his aid, had his left arm slashed as well.
It was reported that the girl’s family had adopted the deceased and took care of him until he turned on them.
He said that the deceased ran away and hid in the bush.
Angry relatives who went on a search for him, found him, killed and threw his body on the roadside.
Segi said police in the province have conducted a special operation to hunt down the other escapees.
