AN ESCAPEE from Kerevat jail fell victim to “jungle justice” when he was attacked and killed by villagers in the Gazelle district on Wednesday.
According to reports from East New Britain police commander, Supt Sylvester Kalaut, the escapee was identified as Richard Sakawi, 17, from Yipako, Wosera, East Sepik.
Sakawi had allegedly been in hiding around the Vunapalading No. 3 area and on Monday this week when he attempted to rape two young woman.
The two reported this matter to their families and relatives who mobilised scouting blocks and bush areas until they found him and surrounded him.
The people asked him to surrender voluntarily but he instead put up a fight with the mob when they overpowered him and killed him.
Sakawi received bad knife wounds to his right ankle and allegedly died of heavy blood loss.
His body is currently at Nonga Hospital morgue awaiting post- mortem.
Sakawi before escaping along with seven others on July 21 this year was serving five years for possession of an offensive weapon and 18 years for wilful murder.
Kalaut has again appealed to young girls and women to be cautious when venturing out especially to the gardens or to and from the schools and towns.
