FOURTY-SIX suspects, who escaped from Banz Police Station on Friday, have apologised to the Jiwaka police commander Insp Gideon Kauke and will surrender to police this week.
Kauke told The National that the suspects were able to escape from the station after relatives and tribesman caused a commotion.
“I received a call from Seign Lap village councillor in Banz and he said all the suspects would return to police station for normal police process to take place,” he said.
Kauke said he gave the escapees seven days, from Friday, to surrender or his men would came after them.
According to police, 46 suspects allegedly stole equipment and materials for an electrification project in North Wahgi stored at Singirok Barracks.
“They took the properties and sold them to an Asian business operating in Mt Hagen when police were alerted about it,” he said.
He said tribesmen came into the station over the arrest of the suspects, they were outnumbered by the crowd.
