THE four detainees who escaped from Buimo Prison earlier this month in Lae, Morobe, are yet to be recaptured with authorities still investigating the incident.
Buimo commander Michael Wundia said the escape occurred on April 9.
Papua New Guinea Correctional Services Commissioner Stephen Pokanis said the four male prisoners, who were detained for various crimes and were awaiting their court appearances, dashed for freedom while on their way to receive medical treatment.
The escape occurred around 10am when the detainees were released from the main holding block to go to the prison clinic which is on site but the men scaled a barbed wire fence and escaped.
Lae Met Sup Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban told The National yesterday that his officers were still investigating the escape.
Commander Wundia said the escape was a result of a breakdown in communication between the prison gate officers and those at the operational base.
He said an internal investigation was underway.
