A MAN taken in for questioning over sea piracy and robbery cases was shot by police when he tried to jump from a police vehicle, Milne Bay police commander Supt Peter Barkie says.
He told The National that police had warned the man, believed to be part of wanted criminal Tommy Baker’s gang, a few times not to run away but he ignored them.
Police in Alotau were tipped off about the whereabouts of the 26-year-old man from Duau in Alotau who was allegedly among those involved in the burning down of the Water Police barracks on April 30.
“On Sunday, between 1pm and 2pm, police received a tip-off that the suspect had showed up at his home at Goilanai,” he said.
“Police raided the residence and arrested the suspect.
“Along the way (to the police station) the suspect made an attempt to escape. He was shot on the right leg. He is now at the Alotau General Hospital and will be charged upon discharge.”
Since 2019, 32 people with ties to the Baker’s gang have been arrested and charged, five have been shot and killed, three injured, and one surrendered himself to police.
Since April 30, police operations had been ongoing with the 60-day operation to end tomorrow.
Prime Minister James Marape told The National that the funding for the operations would be supported by the Government.
“I have asked Police Minister William Onglo and Police Commissioner David Manning to work on a submission not only for Alotau but for policing resources around the country,” Marape said

  • I would like to comment on the crimes; car jacking, house breaking, and pick pocketing that is rapidly increasing in the National Capital District.

Just last week, a family at Gerehu stage 4 in the Moresby North -West electorate was held up at gun point in front of their premises, gate and their car was stolen and driven off by thugs.

and youths going rowdy during the stage of origin game 2, that turned into a fight between the supporting team members.

the wonderful city NCD and surburb of North West is turning into chaso, can the law enforcing teams work hard in maintaining law and order in this places.

    thank you

  • All these kinds of activites like robberies were increasing all over the provinces in Papua new guinea and although around the World so please makesure our Government must put some rules and regulations to stop that kind of bed behaviours. If it will continue then the police will shoot to dead.

  • Papua new guinea is a Christian country and yet all these kind of things going worse so please once again i appeal to our government that makesure we all stand as one peple, one nation and one country to STOP that fire burning and the police will shoot to dead only then i belief that we’ll stop it.

  • How are we going to Take Back PNG and claim PNG a Christian Country while criminal activities, ethnic clashes, domestic violence, and corruptions are on the rise..ridiculous…..
