TRAINING on child and family nutrition was delivered under the Safe Children, Healthy Mothers (SCHM) project in East Sepik recently.
The week-long training was on infant and young child feeding for healthcare workers, village health volunteers and community leaders.
The SCHM project is being implemented with support from the Australian government, through the Australian NGO cooperation programme (ANCP), Australian High Commission and Save the Children Australia.
It aims to reduce chronic malnutrition among children and mothers in the Western, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and East Sepik.
Dreikikier women’s council president Carol Mando, who was part of 33 women in a group of 70 that underwent the training, said there were challenges with nutrition in her village.
“The one thing that’s lacking is the knowledge on how to prepare balanced meals,” she said.
Participants came from four of the six districts and learned about nutrition for pregnant and lactating women, breastfeeding for children, good hygiene practices and food varieties, to name a few.
