THE Port Moresby Nature Park was a hive of activity recently when volunteers from Esso Highlands Ltd, operator of the liquefied natural gas project, took time out of their weekend to do work around the park.
The park, previously known as the National Capital Botanical Gardens, was formally launched on June 16.
As part of the re-launch, many improvements were made to the park including the development of a rainforest walk that includes a cassowary bird viewing area.
The Port Moresby Nature Park is the only park in the world to keep all three species of cassowaries, each of which have recognised conservation status by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The Nature Park provides separate rainforest enclosures for each species so they can be viewed in their natural habitat.
Esso Highlands environment and regulatory manager, Ruben Medrano said the company team helped with the cassowary enclosures and rainforest walk for the re-launch of the Nature Park.
“Two groups from EHL worked on consecutive Sundays to paint the cassowary enclosure, rainforest walk, cassowary information hut and the water tank.
“They cleaned and tidied up in time for the launch of the Nature Park.”
There were 19 company staff and their families who worked during the two days to clean the gardens.
