THERE is growing interest among European countries to invest in Papua New Guinea, an official says.

Trade Commerce and Industry Minister Richard Maru made the comment yesterday following his return from a two-week trade and investment mission to Europe with a small delegation from Department of Trade Commerce and Industry, including Secretary John Andrias.

Maru said there were wide interest from European countries in sectors in PNG ranging from mining and petroleum, telecommunications, housing companies and the banking sector, among others.

“The indications look quite favourable and we are still going to push for them. But if they want our business, they should not operate in for instance, Sydney – but they should come and operate in Port Moresby.

“But all in all we had a very good trip over the last two weeks,” Maru said.

He also noted that scholarships for studies was on the agenda during the discussions and meetings.

However, Maru noted that the market in Europe would be challenging as well.

“Our challenge is to market the investment opportunities in PNG to companies and the government of the 27 strong EU (European Union) member states by strengthening our presence and visibility in Europe.
