AN annual event of Toyota Tsusho South Pacific Holding’s (TTSPH) group skill contest has been held in Papua New Guinea for the fourth time in 27 years.
Country representatives from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Vanuatu participated in the contest yesterday.
“We consider staff development a fundamental part of our day-to-day activities,” said TTSPH Brisbane general manager operations Denzil Robertson.
The contestants were selected to attend the TTSPH contest through a domestic contest in their home country first, with winners participating in Port Moresby.
There were four participants under each category, which was set up in real-life situation where participants were tested on their competence and performance.
The categories were: Toyota technical, service adviser, parts adviser and sales consultant.
Participants under Toyota technical had to go through four sections of air conditioning, charging test, lack of power and injection timing where problems were set for them to identify and solve within 45 minutes.
All these were set up for the participants to use their skills to fix vehicles of different brands and conditions.
Other categories tested participants in how well they attended to and met a customer’s needs and satisfaction under the service adviser.
The parts adviser test was mostly on listening skills and competence of how a parts adviser could communicate with a customer regarding parts of a vehicle of a certain type.
Sales consultant tested how well participants could market different vehicles to various customer needs.
“The two main objectives of our skills contest are to demonstrate and promote excellence in the workplace,” Robertson said.
The winners of the Toyota tech, service adviser and parts adviser will be awarded a trip to Japan later in the year to be inducted into the Toyota Motor Corporation ‘Customer Service Champions Hall of Fame’.
