FORMER West Sepik Governor Amkat Mai passed away yesterday.
Telefomin MP Solan Mirisim described him as a father-figure to those who had crossed paths with him.
Mirisim said the late governor was his grade seven mathematics teacher at Telefomin High School in 1991.
Mai went on to lecture at Madang’s Divine Word University until 2012 when he left to contest the general election under the National Alliance banner.
Expressing his condolences yesterday, Mirisim said: “He was a humble man who provided strong leadership in the province during his political career from 2012 to 2017 before losing his seat in the 2017 elections.
Mirisim said Mai was the first and only person from Min to be the governor of West Sepik.
“I was blessed to have met him again in 2012, this time through politics when I was first voted in as MP for Telefomin,” he said
“Mai will be remembered for playing a role in the initial arrangements on the construction of Tabubil-Telefomin road.
“He was a friend, colleague and a father-figure to many.”
