FORMER Rabaul Gurias forward and Hela native Obert Hondole says the Hela Wigmen should consider recruiting more local players from the province.
Hondole, who is currently the Coca-cola Ipatas Cup coordinator in Hela, told The National on Friday that he saw a lot of talented players during the hosting of CCIC last month.
He said the Wigmen did not need to look further than their local talent at home.
“Hela is known for tribal fights and violence and not much rugby league is played,” he said.
“That is slowly changing. There are many youths who are now picking up rugby balls and they want to play.
“Last month we hosted Coca-cola Ipatas Cup matches for the first time and the support we got was overwhelming,” Hondole said.
“Participation was huge and people were amazed with talent that was on display.
“They played some great football and I can see that they have the potential to play in the Digicel Cup.
“It’s about time the Wigmen give the local boys a chance to represent their province at semi-professional level.”
