FORMER PNG Kumuls and Hunters player Timothy Lomai says players should have respect for the game and abide by match officials’ decisions.
Lomai said this in response to the incident that happened in Minj, Jiwaka over the weekend where Mt Hagen Eagles captain Levai Andrew didn’t want to leave the field after being sin-binned by referee Bonny Bin in their match against Central Dabaris on Saturday.
Andrew was charged with two separate grade three contrary conduct charges by the PNG National Rugby League Competition match review committee and is facing more than 10 weeks on the sidelines.
Lomai said players should have respect match officials’ decision and those who wish to walk off the field in protest because of a referee’s decision should be banned for a few games.
“Our touch judges and referees deserves a little bit of respect,” Lomai said.
“Professionalism should start from the bottom before moving up. You don’t go to Hunters to get groomed, you go there prepared to progress further. We should start respecting rules, players and decisions.”
Meanwhile, the Dabaris said in a statement posted on their social media page to let the match review committee deliberate on the matter after the game ended in an 18-all draw.
“We trust that with the use of technology the vast resources and expertise now associated with the game, will set a new standard moving forward,” the club said.
“We will allow that process to take its course and expect that a judicious outcome will be delivered, upholding the integrity of the competition managers and does not bring the game further into disrepute.
“The Central Dabaris is one of the most transparent sporting organisations where our followers get to see, hear and read about our programmes and activities. The use of technology plays a huge role delivering content and experience.”
