MOTUKEA international terminal chief executive officer Robert Maxwell says safety at the workplace should be everyone’s priority.
He said this during annual safety day on Saturday at Motukea in Port Moresby. About 600 family members of staff attended the event.
“The main reason behind the safety day is to educate the families of staff, particularly the children, to understand some of the risks that is involved in their parents’ working environment,” Maxwell said.
“Also to create awareness to the families so when they go back home, they can create awareness about safety in their own communities.”
There were safety demonstrations by the fatal five teams and they were:

  • LIFTING and suspended load;
  • Working at heights;
  • Transport;
  • Control of contraction; and
  • Stored energy.

Children also participated in paintings and quizzes after the demonstrations and prizes were awarded.
The lifting and suspended load team that consisted of finance, human resource administration and operations staff won K500 for their best safety demonstration.
The other four teams of the fatal five each received K300 as consolation prizes.
Maxwell said attendance by families of the staff was fantastic and hoped for a better safety day next year when new things would be prepared to be showcased to the families.
“As in the theme for this year’s annual safety day ‘Never give safety a day off’ I want everyone to go back home with the idea of how to overcome risks not only at the workplace but also in their homes,” he said.
