Expat gets three years suspended sentence for sexual touching

National

AN expatriate convicted on two counts of sexual touching had his three-year jail sentence suspended in Manus.
Police commander Chief Insp David Yapu said the expatriate was found guilty last week of sexually touching a local woman who worked at one of the hotels in Lorengau. “The man identified as Terry Shane Geddes, 60, of Woodside, Brisbane, was found guilty by Justice Sinclair Gora in Lorengau,’’ he said.
Chief Insp Yapu said the woman was touched around her genitals and buttocks twice and was convicted on two occasions.
The defendant, he said, was earlier convicted by Justice Nicholas Kirriwom in the Lorengau National Court in June on the first count of sexual touching of a female, a dinner attendant at a local bar in March 2019.
“He was sentenced to 12 months (jail with) hard labour but the sentence was suspended and the defendant was ordered to pay compensation of K1,000 to the victim within a month .”
“His second hearing on the second charge, also of sexual touching, Justice Gora convicted and sentenced him to two years’ (jail with) hard labour.
The sentence was suspended, with nine conditions imposed by the court.
“Some of the conditions were that the defendant pay compensation of K2,000 to the victim within two months, be on good behaviour, not to consume alcohol or drugs, serve the suspended sentence in Lorengau and not leave Lorengau or PNG.”

  • Seems like in this country there is no law to prosecute expatriate who committed offences or the law of this country is so bias that I can not understand why a PNG native committed the same crime will dealt with law accordingly and will spent time in jail…may be just because of their colour skin or how I wonder….In that particular province I can remember may be last month or so one refugee under the influence of alcohol drove carelessly and kill a woman who with him in the car and yet being released and walk away freely……very sad to read the same thing happen again to local manus woman,,,may be more to come so lets wait around and see?????????

  • So em waitman na ol’ mas Sori long em ya….imagine a PNG man doing the same thing in Australia….

  • This idiot Terry Shane Geddes have already been convicted for a similar misdemeanour earlier and this is the second time but yet gets a suspended sentence and asked by the same court to compensate the victim – Sinclair Gora are you for real??

We are trying to do away with compensations for victims but here we are judge and a court allowing for it. For goodness sake whats wrong the judge’s brain – suspending the sentence and allowing compensation??

  • What if she had been Judges daughter????
Deport this nuisance Aussie he is a ‘3-times loser’

  • What is wrong with our justice system? BLM!! these women deserves Justice not compensation? They came to the courts to be heard and protected not bribed and shut-up. To make things worse, this is a high court with Judges making these decision, its not a village court or a magistrate making the decision. What a shame this reflects on our Justice system, what a shame. We say we are a sovereign nation, but yet our Justice system is manipulated and fails us at the grassroots level. So what are we then, since the Justice system can not uphold its basic laws to protect its citizens. Such discisions discourages the grassroots espcl the women folks to rise up and report such abuses or come to the courts. On the otherhand people will take law into their own hands and the next time the defendant might not see the light of day.

  • Being an ex expat I am ashamed to be from the same country as this person. He should be treated with the same disrespect he has given a local girl and the same disrespect he has given our beautiful country and yours. Deal harsher punishments as it should be the same for everyone.

  • What the F—K with our court system? The Justice system is saying “no to compensation payment” but is now exercising compensation. Is the courts promoting compensation payments? Human Rights Activists who had being vocal about GBV, why are you guys so silence here? Sinclair Gora are you a true Judge? This is why the Foreigners are laughing about PNG. PNG talk and act smart, dress beautiful after graduating getting masters and law degree but still think and act as stone age people.

  • True True white man sexual harassment in PNG is not serious olsem touching only na not real…a joke.
In Australia, tell you very serious offence and will destroy your image and even cost your life and job and will be in your criminal records or police records and end of story

  • Yeah guise PNG justice system is fucked. I tell ya…if it was in Australia you would be blacklisted and that even will cost your life. For this case, the offender touches her private part which is so fucking serious and in Australia, touching any part of a females body without her consent will cost your life …and go straight to jail…Anyway please PNG justice system needs to wake up and toughen the all the laws of our country and apply appropriate penalties to law offenders.
