THE fight against the use of illegal drugs such as marijuana is the business of every person, including community groups, a senior narcotics bureau official said.
National Narcotics Bureau deputy director Kiria Kotange said every person should take ownership of the issue and spread awareness of the severe damage drug abuse caused to society and development.
Kotange was speaking at a function on Wednesday where he disbursed several cheques totalling more than K27,000 to community organisations working on the drugs issue.
Kotange said that drug abuse, particularly marijuana, was a major concern as it destroyed lives and its users created disarray in communities.
He said the bureau was now focusing on working in partnership with several established community organisations such as churches, sporting associations, clubs and schools in the battle against drug abuse.
The groups receiving money from the bureau included the Board for the Disabled, National Capital District Disabled People’s Association, Port Moresby Women’s Rugby League, Kaugere Rugby League, Nine Mile Good Nius Lutheran church, Tigers Aussie Rules Club.
