PRIMARY schools within Kerema Urban local level government have been given an extended week of term holidays, an official says.
Acting primary schools coordinator Max Hulama said: “This is due to the fact that all counting process for the three seats of Gulf will take place in Kerema and this will affect the students learning.”
Hulama said they had also extended the term holidays for Ilakaraeta and Sikalu Primary schools as security personnel assigned for the elections were currently accommodated within the vicinity of the schools.
“We are actually looking at schools that are affected, so what we can do now is consider the students to stay out for a while, once everything is over, they can return to classes,” he said.
He said other schools on the outskirts of the town would start classes as per the education calendar while teachers who had been registered for counting would be granted permission to participate in the counting period.
“With the new schedule for our schools in the town area, we have allowed for the teachers to also prepare a fallback plan to make up for lost time as soon as everything returns to normal,” he said.
