EXXONMOBIL PNG Ltd is supporting the country’s electrification goals through gas-fired power generation, managing director Andrew Barry says.
Barry said the gas-fired power station, NiuPower Ltd, a joint venture between ExxonMobil PNG and Oil Search Ltd, would save PNG Power Ltd and the Government K300 million on fuel costs.
“As the country continues to develop, so are the ways in which we could encourage and support its development,” he said.
“We are now providing gas through the new 58 megawatt NiuPower power plant which will add 40 per cent of additional capacity to the Port Moresby market.
“This project is expected to save hundreds of thousands per day in fuel costs.
“It is also exciting to note the progress being made by Dirio.
“We will be supplying gas to Dirio (Dirio Gas and Power Company) for an additional power generation in Port Moresby as well as looking at other opportunities throughout the country for expansion.”
Barry, while providing an update of the company’s operation in the country, said during the construction phase between 2010 and 2014, the company had:

  • Generated employment opportunities for 10,000 Papua New Guineans;
  • invested K650 million on community infrastructure and programmes;
  • protected and preserved PNG’s cultural heritage sites and incredible biodiversity; and,
  • Drove double digit economic growth rates across the country.
