Facility to be vocational centre

THE detention facility built at the cost of more than K2 million in East Lorengau, Manus will be made a technical vocational centre under the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, says Immigration and Border Security Minister Westly Nukundj.
Nukundj said the Government would work in collaboration with the people of Manus through the office of the governor to institute the change.
“The government property must be protected at all cost by those engaged to provide security and maintain law and order because it will be passed on to the Office of Higher Education and the Manus government to have the Manus Technical Vocational School established,” he said.
Nukundj told Parliament yesterday that the Marape Government as well as the Australian High Commission were aware of the plan to convert the detention facility into a school.
He was responding to questions from Manus Governor Charlie Benjamin, who requested that the facility be given to Manus Government and converted to an educational facility.

  • The Defence Force Naval Base should be given the facility as the detention center now sits on the defence force’s land. Further all the existing commendations including single and married quarters are beyond repair. Should the government reconsider its decision and hand the facilities to PNGDF Naval Base. Further, PNG and USA are considering to establish a regional base on the same location and as such consider to have that facilities for Defence Force Naval Base. Thanks
