A FAMILY hid in a room in their home when armed robbers entered in the wee hours of the morning on Thursday – as the father called police in Alotau on his mobile phone for help.
Milne Bay provincial police commander Inspector George Bayagau said the thugs fled when they heard the father calling the police. They took a laptop.
“About 10 men armed with six firearms entered the house at about 2.30am on Thursday at Ladava. However, the father quickly alerted his wife and children after realising that a gang was in the premises. They all went inside a room.”
Bayagau said the thugs looked for the family and tried to break down the door to the room.
“However, they heard the father calling the police on his mobile phone. They left after taking a laptop.” He said they were looking for the thugs.
Meanwhile, no arrests had been made in a case in which a gang robbed tourists at the Tawali tourist resort last month, although police had some names.
According to Tawali Resort general manager Armando P. Agusto, the 16 armed men entered at about 7.05 on Aug 23 and robbed 10 Chinese, nine Americans, one Slovak, one Brazilian, two Israelis and one Canadian.
“The criminals robbed them while they were having dinner and took their cellphones, laptops, money and other personal items. No guests or staff were physically harmed during the robbery.”
