A FAMILY home in Hohola, National Capital District, went up in flames yesterday around noon.

It was part of a double storey, eight-unit building situated along Wards Road near the Eki Vaki Primary School.

The fire is believed to have started in the main bedroom of the home owned by a Milne Bay couple with four children, two of whom were home with their babysitter when the blaze started.

The children’s mother, who did not want to be named, said she was happy that her children were safe but upset that all their household goods and other belongings were destroyed, except for the clothes they were wearing.

“Everything is gone,” she said tearfully. “Everything we have accumulated over the years.”

The woman said a leak through the bedroom ceiling that had not been fixed by the landlord might have caused the suspected electrical fire.

A female tenant from the flat below was also quite distressed as the ceiling of her home was also burnt and water from fire hoses gushed down into her home.

Neighbours from the other units also reported theft of their belongings by opportunists while the fire was raging.
