The family of the male Papua New Guinean student who died in a Chinese prison have left for China to repatriate the body back home.
Tyson Kulara, 24, from Enga, was in his second year of studying accounting at the Liaoning University of Technology in China when he was arrested (for reasons not known yet) and detained at a prison in Dalian where he later died.
Father Thompson Kulara, who left for Beijing yesterday, said they would be met by a translator who would assist them to repatriate the body back home.
He was accompanied by his wife and daughter to bring their son and brother home.
“I want to bring my son home, to pay my last respects and bury him in our home next to his forefathers,” he said.
“Like any good father, I wanted to give the best to my son and sent him to China to get an overseas education.
“I am heartbroken that he has died.”
Kulara said they did not know why he was in a prison, but only wanted to bring his body back home for a proper burial.
“We were advised of Tyson’s death in a state prison in China by the Embassy of Papua New Guinea in Beijing on Feb 5,” he said.
“It’s been a month now since his death. I will be going to China to bring my son back home where I can pay my last respects to him and bury him in his home.”
Kulara said the cause of death of his son was unknown.
