THE International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has donated printers and cameras to support the police family and sexual violence units (FSVU) in police stations.
Port Moresby ICRC mission head Mark Kessler said the RPNGC (police) deserved praise for its initiative to establish FSVU in police stations across the country.
He said the rates of domestic and sexual violence were a concern in PNG and the new police FSVU was a step in the right direction.
He said 10 printers and 10 cameras would allow police officers working in FSVUs to better document cases and improve court conviction rates which lacked proper documentation currently.
“Survivors of sexual and domestic violence in PNG often feel like they have nowhere to turn. We hope that once these units are up and running, those affected will gain the confidence to seek justice and support from the police,” Kessler said.
Victims of domestic and sexual violence can seek counselling at the National Welfare Office and free medical care at Family Support Centres in public hospitals.
