MORE than 300 poultry farmers in Sumgilbar in Sumkar, Madang, will attend a two-week poultry management and financial literacy training which started on Monday, Sept 25.
The training at the Megiar Pastoral Centre was funded by Sumkar MP Alex Suguman Orme, at the cost of K50,000.
Sumgilbar Farmers’ Cooperative Society chairman Jimmy Sekum said that the financial support would empower farmers to contribute to sustainable economic activities in the district.
Sekum acknowledged the eight directors of the cluster groups with 358 financial members and other poultry farmers for their cooperation.
“There are still areas for improvement and farmers must be committed to the training,” he said.
“The formation of the Sumgilbar Farmers’ Cooperative was in line with the Government’s focus on the SME strategy which Papua New Guineans must be allowed to participate in.”
Meanwhile, the Madang provincial government committed about K1.2 million to set up a new poultry abattoir at Sagalau.
Sekum thanked Madang Governor Ramsey Pariwa for his commitment for counterpart funding to the K1.2million from the Livestock Development Corporation (LDC) to establish the processing facility.
Agriculture and Livestock Officer Paul Hubub said the society had organised themselves after awareness programmes to participate in supplying live chicken to the market.
He added that the income generated from the sales would help farmers meet their daily family needs and improve their livelihood.
