Farmers want proper irrigation system for dry season

FARMERS in Western Highlands growing fresh vegetables want a proper irrigation system to use during the dry season.
This was conveyed at Gaupa village in Baisu, Central Hagen to the Fresh Produce Development Agency value chain innovative manager Noel Kuman.
They also want to know how to use chemicals and tools to prevent insects from damaging the vegetables.
Farmer Maggie Rombok, Patrick Jacob and Michael Simon said they had producing a lot of vegetables using the faming skills they had been taught. They also said reaching the markets was difficult because of the high cost of air freight, the poor condition of the road to Lae for the shipment to Port Moresby.
They can only sell vegetables at the Mt Hagen market.
“As there are many farmers selling quality vegetables, they have to reduce the prices,” Rombok said.
Brian Bell-Belltek chemical specialists Henry Kamit, Steven Nani and Timothy Namba, educated the farmers on how and when to use chemicals and tools.
