PAPUA New Guinea Fashion and Design Week (PNGFDW) in partnership with the Australian government is hosting a 13-day workshop in Port Moresby in fashion design – the basics in fabric designing.
PNGFDW founder Janet Sios said the aim of the workshop was to train interested individuals in fabric designing so they could learn skills to generate income for themselves.
“The ultimate aim is to help people create small to medium enterprises (SMEs) so they can make money to look after themselves and their families,” Sios said.
The workshop which started yesterday will be facilitated by local designers Anna Amos and Tabu Warupi.
She said the workshop was inclusive of everyone, including the hearing and speech impaired.
“The workshop is targeted at everyone as long as you have a passion for fashion and art,” Sios said.
She said training was simple and practical.
“Often we look down on this industry that has a lot of potential to generate income.
“We say it’s for mothers or women only but it’s not true. Anyone can design and sew.
“The fashion industry can be a sustainable source of income for anyone.”
The two previous workshops were in Lae and Kokopo.
There were 104 participants in Kokopo and 96 in Lae.
Sios said apart from fabric designing, they were also training participants in marketing and the business aspect of it.
