THE Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) says it is awaiting a response from its Lae association over the hosting of several events this year.
BFPNG president Nick Daroa told The National that he had yet to receive confirmation from the association despite the Under-15 national championships being rescheduled for September due to Covid-19.
“The championships, and men’s three-on-three (half court) and five-on-five are rescheduled for September,” he said.
“We’re awaiting the association to confirm whether it is ready to host to these events and the annual general meeting.
“Should it be not viable, we will look at moving them to Port Moresby and announces the changes as soon as possible to give ample time for teams to prepare.” Daroa said BFPNG would continue preparations to host the U15 Oceania championships which will be held in Port Moresby from Dec 6-13.
Meanwhile, he said BFPNG had resumed its programmes after establishing standard operating procedures (SOP) for basketball in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“BFPNG has complied with the Covid-19 SOPs and has resumed its programmes in Port Moresby schools,” Daroa said.
“We will then look to roll out the programmes in other provinces.”
The “Hoops for Health” initiative is part of the BFPNG’s activities this year.
It is a community-engagement strategy established through the support of Fiba and the Australian government.
