THE Papua New Guinea Wushu Federation (PNGWF) says it is grateful to finally be recognised as an affiliation under the PNG Olympic Committee (PNGOC).
According to Wikipedia, wushu is a hard and soft, and complete martial art, as well as a full-contact sport.
PNGWF executives, including president Geoffrey Hui, secretary Kible Bonga and treasurer Iamo Launa, visited the PNGOC office to meet secretary-general Auvita Rapilla after securing their affiliation recently.
PNGWF invited Chinese national coach Su Yongwei to conduct skills training at the Taurama Aquatic & Indoor Centre in Port Moresby.
He said there was a lot of potential in the country but the right skills should be taught at an earlier age to master it.
Yongwei said he was proud to visit to the country to conduct the training.
Hui said the federation was looking to push for the sport to be included in the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
“This will be something big for the country as the federation has bright plans for the sport in PNG,” he said.
“Our local executives like Moses Koiri and Launa have a passion for sports in the country and are committed to see that wushu is marketed and promoted in other provinces as well.”
Karate athlete Andrew Molen said it was a new art and that he was glad to learn something fresh from Yongwei.
“This is a great opportunity as the few of us here have learnt a new art of self-defence,” he said.
