A FEMALE police officer is in court for the unlawful release of a detainee at the Boroko holding cell in Port Moresby.
Officer Mavis Namuga, 29, from Noinaro village in Suabe, Chimbu, appeared before Magistrate Cosmas Bidar at the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.
It was alleged that on July 6, between 4pm to 6pm, Namuga aided in the escape of a detainee from the Boroko Police Station.
Namuga was on duty at that time and tended to the detainee namely Eugene Junior, who was charged with the unlawful wearing of a police uniform as per the Police Act 1998.
Namuga was alleged to have allowed bail for Junior despite there being a bail refusal form signed by the metropolitan superintendent and the arresting officer.
Junior was released on a police bail of K200 sanctioned by Namuga without prior authorisation from her superiors.
Junior has since failed to appear at his court hearings.
Namuga was then charged with aiding a prisoner escape.
Magistrate Bidar adjourned the matter to Oct 30 with an extended bail of K500.
