FIRST-year female students attending the University of Papua New Guinea will be accommodated at the Games Village but will not pay K12,000 in fees, an official says.
They will, however, pay the normal fees for accommodation at the Dame Mary Kekedo Hall at the Waigani Campus which has been closed for repair and maintenance work, according to University of PNG director of public relations and event management Jim Robins.
The fees are K8562 for basic twin share, K9885 for a single room and K11,072 for a single/double with suite.
Robins said work on the hall began yesterday and should be completed before the end of semester one.
“If the Government had fulfilled all its commitments, the hall of residence would not be run-down like this. The Government has not given us any funding for maintenance in the past 10 years,” Robins said.
“Most of the halls of residence in the University of PNG are run-down and have been shut down.
“Students have been moved down to Games Village.”
The halls of residence still in use are the Tuloan for female students, Poroman and Toa for male students.
“The cost of maintenance in the halls of residence is up to K1.2 million,” Robins said.
The university administration in a statement said the compulsory fees would be the same as last year.
Students studying at the Waigani Campus and Taurama Health Sciences will pay K2393, Taurama (Bachelor of Health) will pay K3029 and students at Taurama Nursing will pay K3180.
“Students, who have paid the previously recommended compulsory fee for 2019 of K4242 and K4896 respectively, will be credited with the over-payment.”
