Festival ends on high note

AN Under-12 futsal festival ended on a positive note at the Nuigo settlement in Wewak, East Sepik, on Friday.
This was first of the four festivals in East Sepik before the major event in Wewak later this year.
Initiated as community obligation rather than a competition, the festival followed a community service clean-up led by Women’s National Soccer League club Sepik.
Sepik Futsal Association president Clarence Hukahu told The National yesterday that the festival was part of preparing Nuigo to kick off its season.
“We had a good turnout of children in the community who attended the U12 festival and we’re hoping to start the season soon,” he said.
“The competition was supposed to start a few weeks back but due to the current covid-19 restrictions, we’re just waiting on that to change.”
Meanwhile, the festival was also supposed to identify talents for the Sepik women’s football team for their next league campaign, however, there was a no-show for players.
“We had some good feedback from the community and children in Nuigo came out to participate,” Sepik general secretary Hukahu said.
“In the next five weeks, we will be hosting another similar festival at Kairuru Island for the U12s there and also to scout players for Sepik’s train-on squad for next season.”
He said they had plans to host similar festivals in Maprik and Ambunti-Dreikikier before the major event in the East Sepik capital.
