MORE than 10,000 people have watched Avengers: Infinity War in its opening weekend last week, shattering records by Paradise Cinemas since the cinema opened in 2012.
Avengers: Infinity War opened last Wednesday to a sell-out crowd, creating a new milestone in Papua New Guinea cinema history.
All sessions last Saturday were also sold out and Sunday’s sessions did well too.
Before Infinity War, Disney’s Moana held the biggest opening weekend record for a film, followed by Fast and Furious 7, Avengers 2, Jumanji (2017), Batman vs Superman, Black Panther and Fate of the Furious.
Paradise Cinemas’ manager Prue Go said the crowd reaction was “unbelievable” and that these results justified advanced screening in PNG before other international movie goers. “It’s unbelievable,” she said.
“When we opened at 9am over the weekend, our 10am and 11am sessions were sold out within half an hour. By noon, we are already selling the 4pm and 5pm sessions.
“Paradise Cinemas has got a good track record when it comes to Marvel movies because of our ardent moviegoers.
“That’s why Disney, the film distributor of Marvel movies, always grants us advanced screening on all its recent movies like Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Spiderman: Homecoming, Thor, Ragnarok and Black Panther. We have shown Infinity War two days ahead of its international screening date.”
Outside of PNG, Infinity War opened on April 25 in selected overseas markets, where it has sold US$95mil (K311mil) worth of tickets in its first two days, according to Disney.
