THE Finance Department has opened a new cash office where fees, fines and other revenue collections and payments will be made electronically.
Finance Minister James Marape said this was one of the activities the Finance Department was doing to improve its revenue collection services as well improve the way they did businesses so that they could have a good interface with their clients.
“We will no longer be using the old system we have used in the last 40 years but an electronic system where everything would be done in a modernised way,” Marape said.
“Our clients would not have to stand on long queues to do their payments but would be served in a well-organised lounge and set up that is similar to those of commercial banks and finance companies.
“We want to make our services more efficient and effective where all the transfers of money, paper and cheque are done electronically, where everything is visible for all to witness.
“This is also one aspect the department is doing in improving its public finance management system and this is starting here and we invite the provincial treasuries to have such establishments.”
Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari said time was changing and systems were also needed to be changed in institutions as well as those working in the institutions too should improvise so we do things and serve the people well in delivering goods and services.
“It is all about good governance, visibility and accountability so that people don’t jump to conclusions in the way we are managing public funds,” Lupari said.
“They (people) do (jump to conclusions) because there is no visibility.
“All the provinces need to roll out this programme so that such service is not only served in Port Moresby.”
The office is located at the Vulupindi Haus on the ground floor and begins its operation from today.
