THE Papua New Guinea Fire Service has started training its first batch of 2022 recruits from the National Capital District (NCD).
Training superintendent Arifeae Farapo said the 42 recruits started training on May 23.
“The training is progressing well with active participation from both the recruits and the training officers,” he said.
“From the 42 trainee recruits, two are females undergoing training at the Gerehu Fire Service Training College with their male counterparts.”
The main topics covered during the first four weeks were:

  • INTRODUCTION to station management and hierarchy;
  • INTRODUCTION to firefighting and RAR equipment, SAP and SOP;
  • INTRODUCTION to skills and drills, and
  • FOOT drills.

“For the other recruits selected from outside Port Moresby, their engagement with PNG Fire Service started on April 25,” Farapo said.
“All these successful firefighter trainee recruits were advised to report to their local respective fire stations while at the fire stations, a station based training programme was issued to all station commanders to carry out basic skills and knowledge on fire service operation to prepare the recruits.
“These programmes set the basis for the basic firemanship training.
“For NCD recruits, the fire station commanders and inspectors have done a good job to prepare the recruits for the actual training.”
The training has enabled them to transition well to the set training at the training ground.”
Recruits outside of Port Moresby, will begin training once the first batch from NCD complete theirs in a couple of weeks.
A total of 99 applicants were selected from throughout the country which included seven females.
