THE Lae Biscuit Company (LBC) yesterday gave K25,000 to National Soccer League rookies Lahi United.
The money is part of a K65,000 commitment announced by the company last year.
LBC sales and marketing coordinator Harry Kaisa said K35,000 had already been released to the club, with K15,000 going towards purchasing their uniforms.
In a statement, chairman and chief executive Ian Chow said the company was proud to support Lahi.
“Today, we are giving the final K25,000 as part of our commitment in 2018, so the team is now Snax Lahi United,” Chow said.
He said should Lahi develop good players during the National Soccer League Northern Conference this season, they would make the Toti City squad for 2020.
“Our goal is to see soccer in Papua New Guinea develop and take a big brother role in the Oceania region,” Chow said.
“We want to play competitive and skilful soccer. Therefore, we are sowing the seeds today.
“We believe through soccer, we can do that, as it is the only sport played throughout the country.
“This is part of our programme to give youths a chance to showcase their talent.
“Maybe one day, they can represent PNG on the world stage.
“We wish the management of Lahi United all the best for the 2019 NSL campaign.”
Franchise owner and chairman Geob Gariki, on behalf of the club and Lahi Soccer Association, acknowledged the company for its sponsorship.
Gariki said it was difficult to secure sponsorship, with the country facing tough economic times.
He said the sponsorship would go a long way to promote soccer in the province and country.
“Our discipline on and off the field is important,” Gariki said.
“The company wants us to become good citizens and role models in the community.”
