MINING Minister Johnson Tuke, pictured, has urged the Mineral Resources Lihir Capital (MRLC) Ltd board and management to produce results and make a difference for their people.
Tuke, during his address to the board yesterday, said MRLC was doing exceptionally well and had an important role to manage the resources for the people.
“It’s a wonderful thing that you have exited from Mineral Resources Development Company and you can make your own decisions,” he said.
“With the inception of national group subscribing to your board and advising you this, you will go a long way.
“You are here in the board for a reason, not by chance or by opportunity.
“You are here to make a difference for the people.
“You are managing a resource that is extractive and it has a time limit to it. At one time or another resource you are getting your returns will be depleted. Once it is depleted, you will be left high and dry,” he said.
Tuke said MRLCL was a partner in the development process for Papua New Guinea.
“You are an equal partner as important as anybody else, like the international partners and donors.
Tuke said the board needed to maximise its funds to the people which was a big responsibility.
“If you want to hold custody over this position for a long it will mean how much you do for the people,” he said.

  • Mining has limits, what is underneath the earth is finish, we will have nothing left to make profits. We are selling our gold and copper out to overseas to maintain their living standard while we run poor and dry. We should invest mining profits on agriculture business which is sustainable and all of us could benefit. The minister has given the right advice to be prudent in making difference and changes in the mining sector. Producing results in making profit and this profits must un turn eradicate poverty and improve living standard.

  • Producing Results must be tangible and the minister is right on track. Extractive industries like mining have a depleting time-frame and these resources must be seen to be sustainable. Only the people in the Board Room have vested powers to make depleting resources become renewable. Can the Minister lay down the right policies for renewable investments?
